What is Iyengar Yoga?

Named for B.K.S Iyengar who dedicated his life to the study and teaching of yoga;  Iyengar yoga is a systematic approach to cultivating strength, creating space, and training peace of mind for people of ALL ages.   Known for precision, alignment, adaptation, and the use of props, Iyengar Yoga is a yoga practice for EVERY body.  Classes can be powerfully active, deeply quiet, therapeutic, or a little bit of everything.  The Iyengar Method encourages students to build strength and stamina from the ground up and prepares students to safely explore more advanced postures.  Inversions such as headstand and shoulderstand are emphasized when appropriate because of their many benefits for circulation, core strength, and rejuvenation.  For decades, many people have turned to Iyengar yoga as a way to learn about yoga and themselves.  Our teachers bring years of rigorous Iyengar training and experience to every class, ensuring precise, safe, and supportive instruction. Come give it a try and feel the difference! Your first class is free.

Who It Helps

Iyengar Yoga is for anyone who wants to improve strength, flexibility, and balance. It’s especially beneficial for:

  • Complete beginners looking for a safe and structured practice

  • People recovering from injury or managing chronic conditions

  • Older adults seeking gentle, supportive movement

  • Athletes and active adults looking to improve posture and mobility

Why It’s Different

Unlike other yoga styles, Iyengar Yoga emphasizes precision and alignment in every pose. Props such as blocks, straps, and bolsters are used to help you find the posture that works best for your body. This attention to detail ensures that muscles are engaged evenly, promoting safe and balanced movement while reducing the risk of strain or injury.

Beginners Welcome

No matter your experience level, Iyengar Yoga meets you where you are. Each class is carefully guided, with options and props to support every body type and ability. You don’t need to be flexible or strong to start — only curious and willing to explore. Come and try a beginners class, either Yoga Basics or Healthy Aging.
